Bread & Flours is Now Blue Zones Project Approved in Palm Springs!

We have some incredibly exciting news to share: Bread & Flours has just been officially recognized and approved by the Blue Zones Project—Palm Springs! We are Palm Springs' first bakery and business to receive this award from this nationally recognized operation.

For those new to the term, the Blue Zones Project is a global well-being initiative inspired by the world’s longest-lived, healthiest populations (places like Okinawa, Sardinia, and Nicoya). These “Blue Zones” communities have cracked the code on living longer, happier, and healthier lives—not through fad diets or expensive supplements, but through simple, everyday habits:

  • Eating primarily plant-based foods

  • Moving naturally throughout the day

  • Having a strong sense of purpose

  • Prioritizing family and community

  • Creating environments that make the healthy choice the easy choice

When the Blue Zones Project came to Palm Springs, their goal was to bring these proven principles to our desert community—and we’re beyond honored to be part of that movement.

Why This Recognition Means So Much to Us

From the day we opened Bread & Flours, our mission has been rooted in three core values that align perfectly with Blue Zones principles:

  1. Plant-Based Eating / Vegan - Our menu has always celebrated plants first. Whole-grain sourdough, seasonal vegetable-forward hand-tarts, nuts, seeds, and only extra virgin olive oil are the stars here. We believe the most delicious—and life-giving—way to eat is the way people in the Blue Zones have eaten for generations.

  2. Community & Belonging We’re more than a bakery; we believe we are a gathering place. Whether it’s neighbors catching up over a glass of Kombucha on tap, or sharing preservative-free sourdough with a neighbor, we’re intentional about creating the kind of down-to-earth connections that the Blue Zones research shows add years to our lives. Stay tuned for our next community clean-up at Prescott Preserve!

  3. Sustainability & Purpose We source from local farmers as much as possible, which starts with getting as many ingredients from our local communities and California first, and then extending out from there. We compost our food scraps. Elizabeth, who works at Bread and Flours, spearheaded this for us. Elizabeth brings our compost to Desert Compost every week. ( thank you, Elizabeth) We use eco-friendly packaging (only paper, glass, or compostable materials) for all our products that we package and sell under our name. We bake with heritage grains that are better for both people and the planet. In addition, we prioritize the use of flour that is regenerative certified or sustainably farmed. Living lightly on the earth isn’t just good business—it’s part of our moai (the Okinawan word for a lifelong circle of friends who look out for each other).

Earning Blue Zones Project Approved status isn’t just a badge on the wall. It’s external validation that the path we’ve been on since day one—the food we serve, the space we hold, and the values we live by—are helping make Palm Springs a healthier, happier place to call home.
